Ramblings
Reading — The New Creator Manifesto. It’s a white paper with tons of interesting information about the creator economy.
When I became a full-time content creator, my anxiety reached a whole new level, and I’m far from being the only one.
According to this paper:
“93% [of creators interviewed] say that being a creator has introduced stresses that have “negatively impacted their lives,” with 45% saying they’ve experienced “big emotional lows.”
Only 35% of all creators feel they’re earning a reasonable income and putting in an acceptable amount of time and effort.
So yes, making it as a content creator is hard.
A quote that stuck with me, especially as a writer on Medium, where changes in the algorithm immensely impact thousands of writers:
“It’s tough because you are literally at the mercy of an algorithm. It wants consistency and product. And it wants it on the regular. It’s not sustainable for a human being.
In fact, it’s not human.”
BUT a new kind of content creator is emerging: the independent creator — one who doesn’t rely on social media and algorithms for a living.
This small but fast-growing share of the content creation market finds success by relying on 3 principles:
#1 They own a direct relationship with their audience, rather than renting it from social media platforms.
#2 They earn money from cultivating communities, not just building audiences.
#3 They seek to build a network effect, rather than stay on the content conveyor belt demanded by big social platforms to succeed.
This is the future of content creation, and I strongly believe that making sustainable living as a creator is still very much possible.
